Nary a day goes by where a Virginia fan somewhere isn’t dreaming about a cold winter’s night.

To be more specific, there are few days that pass without Hoos everywhere reminiscing about the glorious winter past. Over nine weeks in January and February 2014, the men’s basketball team lost just once and climbed the ACC summit. ACC Champions. Twice. The Cavaliers rolled to a 16-2 regular season record to take the outright regular season title for the first time in 33 years and only the second time in program history. Then they owned Greensboro to add the ACC Tournament crown, joining only the 1976 miracle bunch to win that trophy.

Along the way, seniors Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell became symbols of success. Part of Tony Bennett’s first recruiting class in Charlottesville, the duo stuck it out through the growing pains, rose into leadership roles, and led a group dedicated to the team concept on an incredible journey. From a buzzer-beating disappointment against VCU to a debacle at Tennessee to ACC Champions to No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament’s East Region to a heavyweight battle at Madison Square Garden with Michigan State, fans embraced the Hoos and how they played. Unrelenting defense. Unselfish offense. Unwavering commitment to team.

It’s something those players, coaches, and Virginia fans will never forget – even if fans still have to pinch themselves to make sure it really happened. It did.
