Virginia bounced back from its first loss of the season with an impressive 75-64 victory at North Carolina on Monday. The Cavaliers fixed their transition defense issues from the Duke game and executed better on that end down the stretch as well. What else stood out from the UNC win? The Double Bonus takes a look.

Gill’s Impact

During the non-conference portion of the season, Anthony Gill took it to the competition on the offensive end. In 9 of 12 games, Gill finished in double figures with an average of 13.2 points per game. Two of the single-digit scoring days were one basket away as he had 9 points against Norfolk State and 8 points against George Washington. Four times, Gill posted 16 points or more – 16 each against Tennessee State and La Salle, 18 against VCU, and 25 against Davidson.

Once ACC play started, however, Gill found himself in a mini-slump and often in foul trouble. He’s averaged 8.1 points per game in ACC action, a 5.1 points per game drop. In 9 league games so far, Gill has been in double figures just 3 times – 12 against NC State, 11 against Boston College, and 13 points Monday at North Carolina.

The halfway point for the conference season doesn’t look much different than a year ago, though. Through the first 9 games last season, Gill had hit double figures only once. He averaged only 5.2 points per game in that span. The final 12 league games (including the ACC Tournament), Gill scored in double figures 8 times and he averaged 10.3 points per game.
