The Sampler – a postgame sampler platter style look at that week’s football matchup – is taking on a new look this season. The opening segment will focus on a few plays in the game and what happened on those plays. Consider it like a mini version of film study.

This week, there are a few plays to discuss from the Notre Dame game.

The Slot To The Corner

The longest completion of Canaan Severin’s career set up the Hoos’ first touchdown of the game. He got open along the home sideline for a 38-yard completion and UVa scored from third down at the two-yard line (more on that in a moment).

I liked this concept a lot when watching it on video. UVa initially lined up in a diamond formation in the backfield (fans will recognize that formation from BYU in recent seasons) with two receivers lined up on the hashes. Severin (labeled No. 1 in the image below) was solo to the right and had a corner over the top of him. Connor Wingo-Reeves (No. 2) was the right of Matt Johns with Keeon Johnson (No. 3) behind and Taquan Mizzell to the left (No. 4). Tight end Evan Butts was solo (No. 5) on the left hash mark. The Irish countered with a base 4-3 defense and corners on top of the two solo receivers.
