Virginia finally stopped a three-game losing streak against Duke with a 42-34 victory on Saturday so the Sampler is back before the Hoos try to end a much more frustrating streak against Virginia Tech this weekend. First, a quick minute of film study …

The Cavaliers scored on their opening possession of the game with a 6-play, 80-yard drive that took just 2:47 off the clock. The Hoos had almost all positive plays on the drive: Daniel Hamm rushed for 5 yards, T.J. Thorpe reception for 10, Taquan Mizzell rush for 4, and Hamm screen pass reception for 48 moved the ball quickly into 1st-and-Goal at the 5-yard line before a holding call on Mizzell’s first down carry pushed it back to the 12.

That’s when Virginia went to its bag of tricks, though.

On 1st-and-Goal from the 12, UVA set up in a single back set (Mizzell) with two receivers (Thorpe and Olamide Zaccheaus) to the right and one receiver (Albert Reid) to the left just behind an uncovered in-line tight end (Evan Butts). Once that formation was flashed, the Hoos sent Zaccheaus in motion from right to left to shift the two receiver look to the boundary side with Butts. This set up the trick.
