Get Richt Or Die Trying?

The news on coaches Mike London and Mark Richt broke several hours apart on Sunday with UVA officially announcing London’s resignation and news leaking about Georgia firing Richt. What has followed in the days since can be qualified as all-out internet hysteria, ranging from at least Teterboro, New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where two private planes with connections to University donors had reportedly travelled.

Richt, his career record of 145-51 in tow, immediately surged to the top of fan bases’ wish lists around college football. Miami, Maryland, Missouri, South Carolina, and Virginia were reported to be the first schools to reach out to Richt after Georgia made its move. That happened Monday with Gabe DeArmond being one reporter to discuss those schools on a radio show in Missouri. Richt himself had said on his radio show that “about five” schools had made contact.

UVA fans certainly were ‘all in’ from the moment Richt became available so hearing that the University athletics administration and a reported search committee was being proactive toward Richt was an immediate boost for a fan base that has suffered through 8 losing seasons in the last 10 years. Sabre sources indicated that Richt moved to the top of the Virginia wish list once he became available in a top tier that may also include Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford.

The internet hashtag phenomena produced #getrichtordietrying as the motto among Hoo fans as the campaign to bring Richt to Charlottesville. The reference is to rap album ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ by artist 50 cent. The catch being, of course, that it will cost a heck of a lot more than 50 cents to get Richt back in coaching for 2016 as reports out of the Athens, Georgia, area indicate his family would like for him to take at least a year off from coaching.
