Q&A With Sophomore Free Safety Joey Blount

Addressing the media shortly after the conclusion of preseason practice No. 6 on August 9, Virginia football head coach Bronco Mendenhall was asked about the play of reigning ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year Brenton Nelson.

“Brenton Nelson is in a heated battle with Joey Blount,” Mendenhall said. “Both those guys are playing really well. Brenton and Joey and Juan and Chris Moore, those four are playing really well.”

Blount, a 6’1”, 190-pound sophomore out of Atlanta (GA), played in all 13 games (primarily on special teams) and earned one start as a true freshman last season. He was then enjoying a solid spring before a broken collarbone put him on the sidelines. On July 26, he announced he was cleared to play in preseason practice.

Considering Blount is giving the speedy and productive Nelson, who started all 13 games last season, a serious run for the starting free safety spot, it’s safe to say he is picking up right where he left off in spring football.
