Armaan Franklin Improved For Virginia Even If All-ACC Votes Missed It

When the ACC unveiled its all-conference selections Monday, the Virginia basketball team was well represented. The Hoos landed three players on the list with Reece Beekman and Kihei Clark on the third team and all-defensive team plus Jayden Gardner received an honorable mention pick. Beekman earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor. One name was surprisingly absent, though. Armaan Franklin.

Franklin led the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game and had the most 3-pointers with 58. He finished third in rebounding with 121, third in steals with 27, and fourth in assists with 40. If you look at just his conference numbers, Franklin posted higher averages in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals in league play than overall. He also had a top 5 player efficiency rating among ACC guards at 18.0 and he was the only ACC guard to score at least 300 points and post a defensive rating below 100.

Of course, all of that production helped the Hoos win a share of the ACC Regular Season Championship as well.

“You know I wish all of our guys, this is me as a coach, I wish Armaan could have been recognized somehow, some way on one of the all-conference teams,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “There’s a lot of good players in our league. I wish the guys that were third team should have been first team or second team [smiles]. I believe that because they were part of winning a share of the conference championship, but again you can’t get distracted by that stuff. I told Armaan, you really improved this year, you helped us win a championship, and that’s the good stuff. You look at last year to this year, he was more consistent and just how he worked at it. I was really proud of him. Regular season wise, he’ll have something that he’ll get to hold on to always so that part is good and I think that’s what matters to him.”
