Virginia goalkeeper Matthew Nunes produced a stellar freshman season with the men’s lacrosse program.

Nunes’ list of accomplishments ended up like this: ACC Freshman of the Year, UVA freshman record 159 saves, and first Cavalier freshman goalie to win an NCAA Tournament game since 1999. In that postseason victory at Brown, he tied his season high of 16 saves. In the end, he had double-digit saves eight times.

While the Hoos were winning out of the gates, Nunes battled some inconsistency. He had 10 saves against Harvard, but just a 45.5% save percentage while allowing 12 goals. Against Johns Hopkins, a similar line of 9 saves and 13 goals allowed came on a 40.9% save percentage. Days later against Towson, it was more of the same with 9 saves, 12 goals allowed, and a 42.9% save percentage. Then Maryland dropped in 14 goals against 15 saves and a 51.7% save percentage.
