Ernie Clement didn’t get off to the best start as a hitter at Virginia. But as the Hoos navigated through the NCAA Tournament en route to the National Championship, Cavalier fans got a peek at what the future held.
Though Clement went 15 for 35 (.428 average) in his first eight games of 2015, it took the rookie until April 8 – 24 games later – to collect his next 15 hits. He entered the NCAA Tournament that year hitting .241 with a .298 on-base percentage.
Once the quest for a College World Series title began, however, Clement found his groove. He’s been building on it ever since.
At the Lake Elsinore Regional, UVA’s nine-hole hitter delivered the go-ahead RBI single against San Diego State, breaking a one-all tie in the eighth inning. In Game 2 of the Charlottesville Super Regional against Maryland, Clement ripped a two-run, walk-off single off the Maryland closer to clinch another CWS berth. (Watch it here.)
