Jay Woolfolk Bounces Back, Locks In On Art Of Pitching For Virginia

After two years of making a name for himself as a dynamic dual-sport athlete for Virginia, Jay Woolfolk finally made the decision this past summer to hang up his shoulder pads for a chance to focus on baseball.

Woolfolk parlayed a summer with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and his first ever fall not spent as a quarterback for the Cavaliers into a weekend starting rotation role on the diamond. The junior pictured a first start to remember when he took the field against Hofstra on opening weekend, but things went a different direction.

“Obviously, I probably had one of the worst starts probably ever in UVA history,” Woolfolk laughed.

Though Woolfolk might be harshest on himself, his first career start since high school certainly did not go to plan. The righty gave up 6 earned runs on 5 hits, including a home run, along with 5 walks before exiting after only 2 innings pitched.
