In a Sunday rubber match against a ranked Wake Forest team, one also coming off a College World Series appearance, not much had gone right for the Virginia baseball team as it trailed 10-6 in the eighth inning. Since scoring 16 runs against the Demon Deacons in game one, the fourth-ranked offense in the country – in both runs and batting average – had largely been held in check over the next two games of the series.
The Cavaliers just needed a spark.
“I think Virginia baseball is gritty, hard working and I don’t think there’s anything we can’t come back from,” junior outfielder Casey Saucke said.
A hitless Harrison Didawick stepped to the plate in the bottom of eighth and, just like the UVA sophomore has done many times this season, provided the needed spark with a 3-run, 427-foot missile just inside the right field pole.
