Ty Jerome’s college debut for the Virginia basketball team didn’t go as he had hoped in early November. Instead of sulking about it, however, he turned to a strategy he adopted in 2016. He wrote it down.
Later, Jerome can reference what notes he left himself after specific games, blocks of the schedule, or particular practice lessons that he wants to remember.
”I keep a little basketball journal,” Jerome said. ”I write down a few things I do well and a few things I need to work on or if I do something that I write to myself I can’t let happen again. The mistake against Greensboro was a huge learning experience. This year my role really is that my number could be called at any given time or it could never be called. I just need to stay encouraged and stay ready.”
In the Hoos’ season-opening 76-51 win at UNC-Greensboro, Jerome did not see action until the second half when he played 9 minutes. In what mostly was a nondescript debut, the freshman point guard did not look like the poised playmaker advertised on the recruiting trail or the high school circuit in New York. He logged 2 turnovers and 0 assists while playing in an uncomfortable rhythm.
