On a weekend where the ACC saw several of its highly ranked teams take losses, Virginia couldn’t avoid the fray with Florida State in town. The Seminoles rallied from a halftime deficit for the second straight season to take down the Hoos, 60-58. The Double Bonus returns to take a look at some of the wrinkles within the game

FSU, of course, used a hot shooting second half from Dwayne Bacon to get the win. Bacon, who had made just 2 of 14 3-pointers in his previous four games per the ESPN broadcast, nailed 6 of 9 triples against UVA. He scored 26 of his 29 points after halftime. A lot of discussion since the game has been the absence of a fire blanket defender – Justin Anderson two years ago and Malcolm Brogdon last season as examples – to cool him off quickly. Of course, that forgets last season’s 69-62 loss to the Noles where Bacon had 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Nonetheless, a hot-shooting player can cause issues for any defense not just Virginia’s Pack-Line choice. The reason it stings so much for Hoo fans when it happens, though? I think it is because the few losses suffered in recent seasons all seem to feature one such player:

  • FSU – Dwayne Bacon: 26 points, 11-18 shooting
  • Syracuse – Malachi Richardson: 23 points, 6-16 shooting
  • UNC – Joel Berry II: 19 points, 5-8 shooting (3-3 on 3’s)
  • Miami – Davon Reed: 21 points, 6-8 shooting
  • Duke – Brandon Ingram: 25 points, 10-22 shooting
  • FSU – Dwayne Bacon: 18 points, 6-11 shooting and Malik Beasley: 17 points, 5-10 shooting
  • Georgia Tech – Quinton Stephens, 16 points, 6-8 shooting
  • Virginia Tech – Zach LeDay, 22 points, 8-15 shooting
  • George Washington – Patricio Garino, 18 points, 7-8 shooting
  • Michigan State – Travis Trice, 23 points, 7-15 shooting
  • UNC – Justin Jackson, 22 points, 8-10 shooting
  • Louisville – Montrezl Harrell, 20 points, 7-14 shooting
  • Duke – Quinn Cook, 15 points, 6-10 shooting and Tyus Jones, 17 points, 5-10 shooting

That’s 13 of the last 14 losses for the Hoos where at least one player went for 16 or more points, including eight players with at least 20 points. There’s also 7 players that have made 60% or more of their shots.
