Forgive Virginia fans if they’re feeling a little shell-shocked the past two weeks. It’s been a while since they’ve seen a Tony Bennett led program struggle this much. The Double Bonus is back to look at the latest trends.
UVA lost its fourth straight game earlier this week when UNC and Miami took out the Hoos in a Saturday-Monday double dip. Virginia Tech started the skid with a double overtime win in Blacksburg, while Duke added to it in Charlottesville. The last time the Cavaliers lost four straight? That would be the 2009-2010 season when Bennett’s first team lost eight straight to close the regular season.
That’s a long time ago. YouTube (2005) and the first iPhone (2007) both were toddlers back then.
So what caused the slide? The competition level is a good place to start. UVA lost to teams ranked 49 (VT), 14 (Duke), 5 (UNC), and 28 (Miami) in KenPom’s ratings. Those same teams sit 36, 12, 3, and 37 in the RPI. Those sets of rankings are through Friday, Feb. 22.
