The Virginia basketball team picked up a critical road win at Wake Forest on Sunday as it tries to improve its postseason resume during this late January stretch. The Hoos are fighting it out in the middle of the ACC pack and their NET rating numbers, used by the NCAA to make tournament selections, continue to lag just outside the typical range for the at-large pool.

To get the Wake game into the win column (65-63 in overtime), UVA picked up a big performance from Tomas Woldetensae. He poured in 21 points on a career-high 7 3-pointers and as Virginia coach Tony Bennett laughed on Monday, the Hoos needed all of them. Woldetensae canned the go-ahead triple in overtime that helped decide the outcome too.

Featured in this Double Bonus article for a recent shooting surge, Woldetensae has now made 24 of his last 55 3-pointers. That’s a 43.6% clip. Only one other Wahoo made a trey at Wake and Woldetensae had the assist on it. That’s a good jumping off point for the latest Double Bonus.

In the final minute of regulation while trailing 53-51, UVA dialed up an action that provided three options to try to tie the game or take the lead. The third option – a kickout 3-pointer – ended up as the opening and Jay Huff calmly knocked it down from the left corner to give his team a one-point lead with 39 seconds remaining. Huff, battling foul trouble all day, had just entered the game 11 seconds before that for the first time in nearly six minutes. To protect him on the defensive end the next possession, he exited after just 16 seconds of action.
