The Virginia basketball team finished off its home schedule with a win against Miami at the John Paul Jones Arena. That followed the only home loss of the season to NC State. The Double Bonus returns for a closer look as the Hoos close out the regular season.

Screen And Sprint

The Cavaliers took control of the game against the Hurricanes with a flurry late in the first half that featured back-to-back Sam Hauser 3-pointers. The first came in transition on a feed from Trey Murphy III. Coming out of a timeout, Virginia had a plan to get a shot in the same spot.

The concept started with Hauser on the left block in a screener role. The Hoos ran Tomas Woldetensae off the screen with the hope being that Hauser’s defender would need to help just a bit on that cutting shooter. In this case, Elijah Olaniyi did not help on Woldetensae, but he still had to keep up with Hauser. The UVA forward set the screen and then sprinted in the option direction toward a waiting screen from Justin McKoy. With Olaniyi positioned away from Hauser in order to let his teammate chase a cutter through the screening area, he was a step behind Hauser from the start.

Hauser ran quickly to the right wing and caught the pass from Beekman. McKoy tagged Olaniyi, who tried to follow Hauser around McKoy. That screen was enough to free Hauser and he nailed the 3-pointer at the 1:14 mark. Take a look.
