The Virginia basketball team got 2022 off to a good start with a New Year’s Day win at Syracuse. That came on the heels of a home loss to Clemson in late December. The Double Bonus is back for in-depth analysis about the Hoos.

Shedrick’s Strong Outing

Virginia redshirt sophomore Kadin Shedrick put together the best outing of his career with 12 points and 11 rebounds. That matched his career high for points (St. Francis PA last season) and set a new career high for rebounds. Shedrick was active on the glass, blocked another shot (he’s up to 36 on the season), helped execute a ball screen double team strategy on Buddy Boeheim periodically, and gave the Hoos an offensive threat behind the Cuse zone in certain schemes. Without question, it’s the best performance he’s had against an ACC or Power 5 team with a 9-point, 6-rebound effort against Iowa being the only other statistical comparison.

Overall, the Syracuse contest marked the seventh time this season that Shedrick secured at least 7 points and at least 5 rebounds in the same game. Here’s the breakdown for this season of those games:

  • 7-7 Navy
  • 10-5 Radford
  • 10-10 Coppin State
  • 8-5 Lehigh
  • 9-6 Iowa
  • 8-6 JMU
  • 12-11 Syracuse

That’s now nine for his career after notching two in his limited appearances last season (12 points-8 rebounds vs. St. Francis PA and 10-7 against William & Mary). With nine such games in his career to date, how does that compare to previous bigs in the Bennett era? Favorably. Shedrick has had the advantage of playing major minutes at this stage of his career, though, compared to some previous players in similar spots. Plus, many of the bigs on the list shared the floor and minutes at the time. Still, it’s interesting to take a look.
