Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Clemson X2

The Virginia basketball team faced Clemson in two of the last three games. The results landed on opposite ends of the spectrum. UVA lost 67-50 at home, but then won 75-65 two weeks later. The Double Bonus is back for a closer look.

What Adjustments?

The Cavaliers pulled off a 27-point turn-around by going from a 17-point loss to a 10-point win against the Tigers. Almost all of the swing came from the offense as Clemson scored about the same amount in both games, though the final nine minutes of defense looked better than most of the 71 minutes of action too. Still, how did the Hoos scored 25 more points?

The free throws and 3-pointers were basically a wash with a few more freebies and a couple less deep shots. So 32 points in game one vs. 33 points in game two. Ultimately, Virginia made 10 more 2-point shots in game two and that 20-point infusion accounted for a lot of what was different on the scoreboard. But how? UVA coach Tony Bennett mentioned it with the media saying the team made some adjustments that the players executed well.

The adjustments weren’t earth shattering. In fact, some may call it a security blanket or a reversion to the mean. That’s right. Good ol’ ‘sides motion’ was the antidote.
