Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: The Search For Offense

The Virginia men’s basketball team gets a short break this week while it waits for the regular season finale against Georgia Tech on Saturday. One thing on everyone’s mind, besides bracketology, is whether the Hoos will find any sort of offensive consistency as the regular season concludes.

Over the past five games, UVA scored 49, 41, 44, 72, and 48 points. One of those is not like the others obviously, but those repeated 40’s have become the chief concern at this stage in the season. Regardless of which seed the Cavaliers draw at the ACC Tournament (they already clinched the double bye) or if they make it into the NCAA Tournament field, it seems like it will be difficult to make any postseason noise if the final scores continue to land in that range.

Some common themes stick out statistically in those four outings, stats reading left to right as Wake, VT, UNC, and Duke:

  • First half scoring: 21, 16, 16, 18
  • Overall shooting: 40.8%, 32.7%, 27.6%, 30.9%
  • 3-point shooting: 30.8%, 16.7%, 14.3%, 29.4%
  • Assist-turnover: 11-8, 7-12, 5-6, 12-12

Shudder.
