After a strong start and solid showing Saturday in an intrasquad scrimmage, the Virginia football team’s offense took a step backward Tuesday. The slip led to sprints after practice and a perturbed group of coaches.

UVA offensive coordinator Des Kitchings appeared bothered by the lack of focus and lack of execution from his side of the ball as turnovers and sacks caused problems in the session.

“We had a terrible day offensively,” Kitchings said. “Too many turnovers. Too many pre-snap penalties. We had a pass period, too many sacks. We’ve got to be balanced, we’ve got to be able run the ball physically, but we’ve got to pass protect too. It’s all encompassing. We didn’t meet the challenge today. We took a step back today offensively.”

In total, the offense tallied 6 turnovers on the day with 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Even taking into account that the offense is running a high amount of reps – the goal is a snap every 30 seconds in most sessions – and shuffling in multiple sets of players that’s a high rate of turnovers. Kitchings said it was a blur which players or groups had the most miscues and that film review would help clarify.
