Virginia Football To Check Transfer Portal For Reinforcements

With the conclusion of spring practices at Virginia, the coaching staff now turns its attention to roster management ahead of the summer. That includes searching the transfer portal for potential prospects.

The latest window for college football opened Saturday and players can enter their names through April 30. The Cavaliers will be in pursuit of at least one offensive lineman and at least one cornerback if a good fit is found.

“Still want to get back to our numbers on the offensive line so we’re still looking for another offensive lineman in the portal,” Virginia coach Tony Elliott said. “Knock on wood, hopefully … I don’t have anybody that comes in and tells me they want to go in the portal. I don’t anticipate that, but it is a part of college football now. Corner is another position where we’ve got to get back up to the number. Everything else after that will just be a reaction to any kind of changes that we don’t foresee right now on the roster.”

UVA continues the efforts to rebuild the offensive line after back-to-back offseasons of heavy losses up front. After this past season, six offensive linemen left the roster for varying reasons (Andrew Canelas, Derek Devine, John Paul Flores, Hugh Laughlin, Jonathan Leech and Logan Taylor). That dropped the roster below the preferred number of scholarship linemen and the Hoos only had one O-Line commit from the 2023 class in Cole Surber out of in-state Patriot High School.
