The 2023 season marks the restoration of a storied rivalry between Virginia and Maryland. For the first time since 2013, the two football teams will compete on the gridiron. Prior to Maryland leaving the ACC and joining the BIG 10, the Cavaliers and the Terrapins played annually from 1957 to 2013.
It’ll be exciting to watch as the fierce competition will be reignited, something both sets of fans will be looking forward to. Maryland will be Virginia’s third of four non-conference games and the last one before it opens up ACC play against NC State. It’s also the Hoos’ second road game in the first three weeks of the season.
It’s time to examine Virginia’s third opponent of the 2023 season a little further.

What To Expect On Game Day
What’s To Like: Talented quarterback with lots of receiving depth. Tagovailoa enters his fourth season as the Maryland starter. He’s already had quite a decorated career for the Terrapins. He holds a plethora of school records, including career passing yards (7,879), career passing touchdowns (51), career 300-yard games (12), and many more. One stat of his that stands out among the rest is his completion percentage. In 2022, Tagovailoa completed 67.0% of his passes (No. 16 in nation, No. 9 among Power 5 QBs). This shows just how accurate he is with his throws, and also that he is careful when dropping back to pass, ensuring he doesn’t throw into too many dangerous situations.
