The Virginia football team began a second week of practice in full pads Monday and at least one player had switched positions since the team’s scrimmage on Saturday. After working out with the quarterbacks early in training camp and still wearing the orange QB jersey over the weekend, sophomore Delaney Crawford moved to receiver to start the new week.

Wearing the same No. 3 but now in white jerseys with the offense, Crawford can be seen at the end of this Sabre TV video. The simple motivation for the move: try to find a way on the field.

“Delaney Crawford wants to figure out how this season he can help the Hoos,” Virginia coach Tony Elliott said. “Right now with where he is in his development, the best is for him to play some receiver and kick returner because of his dynamic athleticism. I think we all know how athletic he is. Quarterback, with where he is on the depth chart, he’s not getting as many reps as he would like. So he came to me, it was his decision, said ‘coach I want to explore finding a way to help this football team wherever that may be.’ So we talked about what are the options and he settled in and wanted to give receiver a shot and see if I can be a kick returner so that’s where we’re going to start.”

Crawford played quarterback at Corona High School in California and had a three-star recruiting ranking before choosing the Hoos. So far at Virginia, however, the depth chart there has kept him from getting significant reps. Last season, Brennan Armstrong and Jay Woolfolk took up most of the snaps. This spring and into preseason practices, Monmouth transfer Tony Muskett and true freshman Anthony Colandrea have been the top two on the depth chart.
