A little more than a year ago, the University of Virginia Athletics Department first broke ground on a new Football Operations Center. What started with a small sliver of grass to drop those golden shovels into beside on old practice field has now grown into a full shell with the building scheduled to open in 2024.

It’s a significant boost for the football program. It has been more than 30 years since Virginia opened the McCue Center in 1991 and that still serves as home base for the football program as well as other teams at UVA. Much has changed in 30 years when it comes to college athletics, obviously, and that says nothing of technology, sports performance, nutrition, and more.

So while the department made made renovations and updates to the existing building over time and added the George Welsh Indoor Practice Facility in 2013, some things simply needed a larger footprint and more than upgrades to address. The new building, for example, will have 14,000 square feet dedicated to strength and performance conditioning with an additional 5,000 square feet dedicated to sports medicine. The McCue weight room had just 8,000 square feet.

Virginia assistant coach Clint Sintim, who played for the Hoos from 2005-2008 before a four-year NFL career, said the building already pays dividends in recruiting even before it opens.
