Things didn’t go well for the Virginia football team’s offense in 2022. That in some ways is probably an understatement.

The offense ranked 126th, 103rd, and 107th (tied) among 131 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in scoring offense (17.0 points per game), total offense (344.1 yards per game), and turnovers lost (22) last season. The Hoos dropped 35 passes too.

Most of that is not news to UVA fans or outside observers. For Virginia to outperform preseason expectations – ACC media picked the team last in the conference, while Vegas has set the over/under for wins at 3.5 – the offense is going to have to improve from those numbers. The Cavaliers will be attempting to correct course with a lot of new faces.

They brought in transfers Tony Muskett from Monmouth at QB, Malik Washington from Northwestern at receiver, and linemen Jimmy Christ from Penn State, Ugonna Nnanna from Houston, and Brian Stevens from Dayton. Running back Kobe Pace also came over from Clemson. Beyond that, even some returners from the roster last season didn’t play much either so some of them are trying to carve out a bigger role too. That could be a receiver like JR Wilson or a lineman like McKale Boley as examples.
