When the Virginia football team kicks off its season on Saturday against Tennessee, one player expected to contribute on defense is Malcolm Greene. The transfer from Clemson earned an ‘or’ starter line on the year’s first official depth chart and he will appear on special teams units as well.

With 29 game appearances that included 5 starts at Clemson, it’s not a surprise to see Greene in the mix. He brings college experience to the cornerback spot where UVA will have two new starters this season. Anthony Johnson made the NFL practice squad for New Orleans, while Fentrell Cypress II transferred to Florida State.

The former 4-star recruiting prospect made an early impression on Virginia coach Tony Elliott when he worked as an assistant coach for the Tigers. Greene arrived on his official visit there in a coat and tie. Elliott also recalled that Greene obtained an associate’s degree while in high school. He has since graduated from Clemson as well.

“You’re talking about a very, very motivated young man,” Elliott said. “He loves football. He loves everything about football. … Being that he’s at corner, he plays very, very aggressive and very, very [physical] for his size. You saw those things. He wants to lead. He doesn’t back down from any challenge from a leadership standpoint.”
