During the Virginia football team’s season-opening loss to Tennessee last Saturday, starting quarterback Tony Muskett went down with an injury and coach Tony Elliott listed him as day-to-day for week two. That opened up the ‘Who will start?’ can of worms for fans as UVA prepares for a noon kickoff with JMU at Scott Stadium.

If Muskett can’t go, the Cavaliers would turn to true freshman Anthony Colandrea, who came on in relief against the Volunteers. He enrolled for the spring semester and practices, but only has those 19 snaps from last week as college game experience. Still, Virginia offensive coordinator Des Kitchings said that the team has faith in the youngster despite his limited time in the program.

“If he has to start, confidence is high,” Kitchings said. “He’s earned that trust of us from spring through fall camp. Every time he’s been in the stadium, whether it was the Spring Game, spring scrimmage, or a fall scrimmage, he’s performed.”

The annual UVA Spring Game is really the only extended view that fans have gotten of Colandrea at this point, but some left Scott Stadium with the impression that the freshman may have been the best quarterback in action that afternoon. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 218 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, but another on-the-money deep pass was dropped in the end zone as well.
