During Greg’s Grades recently, I started including little message board nuggets from fans. This one from last week caught my attention: Wonder who made the better halftime adjustments? London or London II? – Sabreville

That’s an interesting question since in the second half of the Wahoos’ first win of the season, Virginia and visiting William & Mary managed to score just 7 points. Not sure what team made better adjustments but obviously the defenses for each club certainly stepped up their second half games.

Virginia has been outscored 107-53 in the second half this season. That’s a 17.83 to 8.83 difference per game. That’s not a recipe for success and it seems to be more of an offensive issue than defensive. Four of UVA’s six opponents this season have scored 20 or more points in the second. The Hoos have scored 10 or fewer second half points in four of their games and have yet to score more than 19.

That said, the Hoos claimed their first win of the season 27-13. The offense was fairly consistent in the second half, netting 251 total yards in the opening half and 202 in the second. They recorded 15 first downs in the first half and 12 in the final two quarters while averaging 6.4 yards per play and 6.3 in the respective halves. Yet, UVA still managed to score 7 lone points despite all three second half drives ending at the plus 15, the plus 7, and in the end zone.
