Tony Elliott finally captured his first ACC win at home. Wow. What an exciting game and just excellent execution of the game plan from the Virginia football team.

A special shoutout should be given to wide receiver Malik Washington. On Saturday, the Northwestern transfer broke the UVA single-season records for both receptions and receiving yards. Entering this weekend’s matchup with Virginia Tech, Washington has 96 receptions for 1,311 yards and 9 touchdowns. He’ll likely have to have another big game against a tough Virginia Tech defense to help the Hoos’ chances.

Like Elliott at UVA, VT is also coached by a second year head coach. Brent Pry has been able to find slightly more success, leading the Hokies to a 5-6 record so far this season. Defense is the name of the game for Virginia Tech. The Hokies often rely on tight man coverage and a strong defensive front. The offense has a few playmakers, the most versatile being quarterback Kyron Drones. The dual-threat QB has thrown for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns (just 3 INTs), while also adding 592 yards and another 4 TDs on the ground. The Virginia defense will need to gameplan for his big play ability.

Obviously, 3 wins through 11 games is not ideal. But let’s be honest, none of that really matters once the Tech game comes around. This is the game that is surely circled on both teams’ calendars all offseason. Of course, Virginia hasn’t found much success in the Commonwealth Clash in the 21st century, but now it’s the Elliott Era. This is the first meeting between the two coaches. Who knows, maybe he’s the Hokies’ kryptonite?
