UVa received a good surprise today, when 6-0, 185-pound athlete Chase Minnifield committed to the ‘Hoos over Louisville, Michigan and Stanford. Louisville, the alma-mater of Chase’s father, Frank (a star for the Cleveland Browns as well), was thought to be the likeliest choice. Chase announced his commitment during a press conference at Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky.
Minnifield plays running back and defensive back for coach Simpson. An all-city performer last season as a junior, he scored 16 total touchdowns (rushing and receiving) and had six interceptions last season. He was recently named one of the “Tremendous 26” rising seniors as voted by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association.
Minnifield becomes the 7th commitment in UVa’s 2007 recruiting class, the third from outside the state of Virginia. He is a good student and has scored a 24 on the ACT, so qualifying will not be a problem.

2007 Class Recruiting
Here is a look at how this commitment affects the 2007 roster. Minnifield is being recruited by UVa as a wide receiver. Here is a look at the current roster for the 2007 season, including Minnifield.
Seniors: Emmanuel Byers , Theirrien “Bud” Davis
Juniors: Maurice Covington , Kevin Ogletree , Andrew Pearman
RS Fr/Sophomores: Chris Dalton
Freshmen: Chase Minnifield
Virginia has some good receivers already in the program (especially the juniors as well as Byers), but adding another receiver or two would provide more depth to the group. Minnifield is an excellent get for the staff, but look for UVa to try and land at least one more receiver in this year’s class. With this commitment, however, UVa can affored to be selective.
