The UVa staff is hosting Blue Chip day tomorrow. The day is not expected to be as populated as in year’s past in terms of uncommitted prospects, but the day can still be a success. And, with limited scholarships available, there aren’t too many targets remaining anyway. All ten verbal commitments are expected to be in attendance to help woo the uncommitted players expected to be in attendance.
The tight end position will be well represented. Spring Valley (Columbia, S.C.) 6-4, 260-pound prospect Andrew Szczerba all plan to be in Charlottesville tomorrow.
At this point, UVa is in the best shape with Szczerba. Al Groh has been up to Salesanium and, judging by the heavy recruitment from the staff, Szczerba seems to be a top target. He likes UVa and Penn State the best right now and would like to make a verbal commitment before the beginning of his senior season.
Cloy will be making his first ever visit to UVa and Devlin will be making his second (the other came earlier this spring). While both players are open at this point, both are being recruited heavily by their respective hometown schools – South Carolina and Pittsburgh. UVa does have a shot with both players however.
As far as state of Virginia recruits go, Stone Bridge OL Andrew Nuss and Highland Springs CB/ATH Cris Hill are expected to be there. Nuss, who will be visiting UVa for the fifth time, indicated earlier this week that he had a favorite but did not want to state it publicly. Notre Dame would be tough to beat if they offered, but an offer from the Irish may not come for a while… if at all. UVa has built a lot of momentum in this recruitment and very well could be the favorite he mentioned. And there is no doubt that West Springfield QB Peter Lalich will continue to work on him.
Hill, who grew up as a Virginia Tech fan, is giving UVa consideration and the ‘Hoos will have their chance to impress tomorrow. The 5-11, 175-pound prospect added offers from Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio State in recent weeks. Boston College, Maryland, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech are among the programs that have offered as well. Hill said earlier that he does indeed want to check out his options, but if he stays in-state the Hokies could be tough to beat.
I spoke with Clover Hill offensive lineman Blake DeChristopher earlier this week. Rumors were swirling recently that he may have committed to Virginia Tech, but he told me he still planned on making a few official visits before making a verbal commitment to any school. Blake plans on taking unofficial visits this spring/summer to Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech (all three have offered). He said he was considering heading to UVa this weekend but wasn’t sure if he could make it. DeChristopher attended UVa’s camp last summer.
If/when we hear of any more players attending this weekend, we will be sure to pass along the info. As always, stay tuned for further coverage immediately following this weekend’s event.
