The countdown to kickoff with Southern California has reached single digits. The countdown to naming a starting quarterback at Virginia? It’s probably on a similar, if not identical, timetable. Fifth-year senior Scott Deke , true sophomore Peter Lalich , and redshirt sophomore Marc Verica continue to battle it out with chances of more than one playing a distinct possibility.

“As we’ve said all along, a number of things can happen between now and then. Somebody could drop a weight on his foot. Somebody all of the sudden gets stage fright and doesn’t look like he’s up to it or whatnot,” UVa coach Al Groh said Thursday. “Rather than doing something here that there’s really no need to do other than to fill up newspaper space, it’s not going to make any difference in the turns the quarterbacks take or how they study tape. It kind of makes things a little bit saner and more quiet for them so we’ll probably stay with this approach well into next week and then we’ll see where we go with that.”

No surprises there. Is there a pecking order or specific rotation being used in practice?
