Varina FB Recruiting Notes

Seniors Tyrell Chavis led the way for Capital District champion Varina (VA) this season, each earning first-team all-district and first-team all-region honors on both sides of the ball. Canady, a starter at quarterback and cornerback, and Chavis, a starter at nose guard as well as on the offensive line, are both bound for the University of Virginia.

“A lot of people I talk to think UVa got two of the biggest steals in the state [in Canady and Chavis],” Blue Devils head coach Stu Brown said.

Canady played quarterback the last half of the 2010 season. He started out at wide receiver this year before moving back to quarterback after the team’s initial starter was suspended after game number two. With the 6’1″, 165-pound Canady at the helm, the Blue Devils averaged just over 38 points per game. And Canady was named the Capital District Offensive Player of the Year for his performance.

The speedy prospect has posted an electronically-timed 4.48-second 40. His speed coach feels he may be faster now, Brown says. At this point, UVa plans to utilize that speed on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback.
