Notes: Mendenhall & Company On The Recruiting Trail

The University of Virginia football staff has hit the recruiting trail hard since the Contact Period resumed this past Thursday. Visiting current commits has certainly been a priority, but Bronco Mendenhall and company have also seen targets and extended some new scholarship offers.

Here is a rundown of some of the activity these past several days…

DE’VANTE CROSS, DUAL-THREAT QB, CLASS OF 2016, UNCOMMITTED

New Cavalier head coach Bronco Mendenhall, offensive coordinator Robert Anae, and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck met with dual-threat quarterback target De’Vante Cross this past Saturday night. Cross, a 6’2″, 195-pound senior, has strong interest in Virginia and plans to visit Charlottesville officially the weekend of January 22-24.

SONNY ABRAMSON, QB, CLASS OF 2016, COMMITTED TO UVA

Pope John XXIII (Sparta, N.J.) signal caller Sonny Abramson verbally committed to Virginia in November of 2014 and has been extremely solid throughout, not wavering in the slightest even during the coaching change. The 6’2″, 200-pound prospect had a good visit with Jason Beck this week.

JORDAN MACK, S, CLASS OF 2016, COMMITTED TO UVA

Mendenhall, linebackers coach Kelly Poppinga, and defensive backs coach Nick Howell traveled to Norcross, Georgia, to meet with 6’3″, 205-pound safety prospect Jordan Mack. Mack told TheSabre.com beforehand that he was solid, and certainly he appears happy in the photo he tweeted below.

Coach Poppinga tweeted his excitement after meeting with UVA’s three commits from the state of Georgia. In addition to Mack, the Hoos have received commitments from Parview (Lilburn, GA) defensive end Stephen Moye and Collins Hill (Suwanee, GA) linebacker Robert Snyder.

BEN KNUTSON and DILLON REINKENSMEYER, OL, CLASS OF 2016, UVA COMMITS

Per his tweets including the one below, Cavalier offensive line coach Garett Tujague has been in Indiana, Michigan and Colorado this week. Knutson, who hails from Penn High School (Mishawaka, IN), informed TheSabre.com that he met with Tujague and Robert Anae. Reinkensmeyer hails from Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, which is only about 30 minutes from Denver.

NEW CLASS OF 2017 OFFERS GO OUT

Coach Bronco Mendenhall extended scholarship offers to two Utah natives this week – Levani Damuni of Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum and Chaz Ah You of Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs.

Damuni is a 6’2″, 225-pound junior who earned Herald Journal All-Valley Defensive Player of the Year honors for his play at linebacker this past season.

Virginia is the fifth school to offer Damuni, who previously held offers from BYU, Utah, Utah State and Vanderbilt. In addition to linebacker, the versatile athlete is also a talented running back.

Chaz Ah You is a 6’1″, 185-pound junior defensive back who boasts double-digit scholarship offers. In addition to UVA, the standout prospect has earned offers from BYU, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Utah, Utah State, Vanderbilt, Washington, Washington State and Wisconsin.

  1. Nice to see all the remaining recruits seem to be enthusiastic about the new staff and direction of the program. I’m guessing the west coast is going to be big with this staff which is great. Hope the staff can identify and add one or more OL to this class. Another class big next year and a lot of departing senior OL.
