Virginia basketball guard Kyle Guy has been named to the Associated Press 2018 All-America third team. This is the second such honor for the Cavalier sophomore, who was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2018 All-America third team on March 21.

Guy, an Indianapolis (IN) native and 2016 McDonald’s All-American, led Virginia in scoring in his second year in the program. He averaged 14.1 points per game in 2017/2018, almost a full 7-point-per-game increase from his first year. Guy also showed marked improvement on the defensive end during his sophomore campaign.

Guy is the 10th Virginia men’s basketball player to receive All-American honors, joining William Strickling (1915), Buzzy Wilkinson (1955), Barry Parkhill (1972 and 1973), Jeff Lamp (1980 and 1981), Ralph Sampson (1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983), Sean Singletary (2007), Mike Scott (2012), Justin Anderson (2015), and Malcolm Brogdon (2015 and 2016).

The AP 2018 All-America first team was comprised of three true freshmen — Oklahoma point guard Trae Young, Arizona center Deandre Ayton, and Duke power forward Marvin Bagley — as well as Villanova point guard Jalen Brunson and Kansas guard Devonte’ Graham. The second team included Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop, Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett, St. Mary’s Jock Landale, Michigan State’s Miles Bridges, and West Virginia’s Jevon Carter.

Guy, Keenan Evans of Texas Tech, Villanova’s Mikal Bridges, Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, and Luke Maye of North Carolina made up the third team.

  1. This year Guy is third team AA. Next year second, or maybe first team AA. To be joined by “The Keystone” Dre Hunter. That will give us two AA ballers on next year’s team, the same that Villanova has this year. (I fantasize that the Huff Kraken will emerge next year to make at least third team.)
