Reports: Virginia Center Jay Huff Sidelined 3 to 4 Months

Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times was the first to report, and the Charlottesville Daily Progress has since confirmed that Virginia men’s basketball center Jay Huff is expected to be sidelined 3 to 4 months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn right labrum.

According to the reports, which gained confirmation of the injury through Jay’s father, Mike, the younger Huff suffered the injury in practice before the Hoos faced UMBC in the NCAA Tournament. Reportedly, Jay was cleared to play in UVA’s NCAA Tournament contest (although he did not) after initial testing. An MRI several days later revealed the torn labrum.

The 7’1” Huff is finishing up his second year at the University of Virginia. After redshirting as a true freshman, the skilled big man with the sweet shot played in 12 games this past season as a redshirt freshman, averaging 3.4 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.8 minutes of play per game. He scored 16 points in his college debut against Austin Peay but played in only four ACC games as head coach Tony Bennett utilized a post rotation of Isaiah Wilkins, Jack Salt, Mamadi Diakite and De’Andre Hunter.

Huff certainly will be hurt by the missed time, which is needed to help him train and gain needed strength for what figures to be a significant role in the 2018/19 season.
