Virginia Basketball Recruit Casey Morsell Turns In Strong Performance In First EYBL Session

St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) class of 2019 combo guard Casey Morsell and his Team Takeover teammates made a statement the first weekend of 2018 Nike EYBL play, leaving Dallas (TX) with an undefeated record at 4-0. Every team Team Takeover defeated won at least two games, including MOKAN Elite, which went 3-1.

Play began last Friday night. Morsell, a 6’2”, 175-pound junior who committed to the University of Virginia earlier this month, had a quiet outing with two points (1-3 shooting, 0-2 from 3), one assist and one steal in 27 minutes as his team cruised to a 15-point win over The City Rocks (N.Y.).

Games 2 and 3 took place on Saturday. Game 2 pitted Team Takeover against a MOKAN Elite squad that destroyed Playaz Club (N.J.) by 44 the night before. Morsell came through in a major way in this 75-73 double overtime win, scoring 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting (including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc). He added three assists, two blocks, one rebound and one turnover in the victory.

Team Takeover improved to 3-0 with a 76-67 win over UPLAY Canada later on Saturday. Morsell had another quality all-around performance, pouring in 14 points (5-of-11 field goals including 3-of-7 from 3), pulling down four rebounds and dishing out two assists. In its only game on Sunday, Team Takeover squeaked out a 60-56 victory over Bluff City Legends. Morsell, who had 12 points, five boards, three assists, one block and one turnover in the game, hit a clutch shot late to help his team to victory.

Following Session I of the 2018 EYBL, Morsell leads Team Takeover with 19.5 minutes per game (Note: D1Circuit.com did not have the minutes tally for the game versus MOKAN, so this stat is for the other three games only) and 11.2 points per game (41.2% FG and 36.8% 3PFG). He is tied for the team-lead in blocks (3) and is tied for second on the team with nine assists. In the final three games, the future Cavalier averaged 14 points per game, made 41% of his 3s, got to the line 16 times (making 10) and pulled down 3.3 rebounds per game.

Below are some Team Takeover clips courtesy of FloHoops. There are two highlights of Morsell. At the :33 mark he drives with his left hand and dishes for an assist. The very next play shows him making an uncontested layup off a turnover.
