TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Portal Watch Continues

UVA President Jim Ryan will compete in the upcoming Boston Marathon and is raising money for UVA Children’s Hospital. Those who donate $26 to the cause will receive this “Run With Jim” T-shirt.

College basketball season wrapped up the season this past week with Connecticut repeating as National Champions on the men’s side, and South Carolina completing an undefeated run to the title on the women’s side. The Preferred Walk-Ons Podcast recapped both Final Fours on this week’s episode.

With the season now in the books, Virginia fans – and their counterparts all around the country – immediately dove into how their teams could climb to the top of the mountaintop. And that, of course, means transfer portal madness when it comes to early April. Players are entering their names in the portal every day, setting up visits, and looking for new homes. Coaches in multiple sports liken the whole deal to speed dating – rapid contacts, quick get-to-know you meetings, and fast-moving decisions.

In UVA’s case for Tony Bennett and company, Leon Bond III jumped into the transfer portal with an apparent decision to leave the program. Meanwhile, two visitors are reportedly on their way to Charlottesville in St. Mary’s forward Joshua Jefferson (6’8”, 220 pounds) and Harvard guard Malik Mack (6’1”, 170).

For Cavalier women’s Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, the only official transfer portal news to date has been for outgoing team members. Guard Cady Pauley entered and then selected Missouri State, where she had originally committed when Coach Mox was the coach there. Alexia Smith made the decision to enter as well.

With so many moving pieces, fans are breaking down the possibilities, the roster needs, and more frequently too. Check out some of the threads from the week and then scroll down for the weekly fan picks:

  1. Going to the NBA, that’s funny, lol. OK by me, we need a 3 and/or 4 that can hit a 15 footer; better yet, a free throw or even 50% on lay ups would have been nice. Don’t know what he is going to do in the NBA, cant live on D there…
