Andre Greene Jr., UNC Transfer Receiver, Commits To Virginia Football

A good month in the transfer portal got better on Friday for the Virginia football team. The Cavaliers secured a commitment from North Carolina receiver Andre Greene Jr. to grow their portal group to six players.

Greene joined cornerback Kendren Smith (Pennsylvania), offensive lineman Drake Metcalf (Central Florida/Stanford), tight end Tyler Neville (Harvard), linebacker/defensive back Corey Thomas (Akron), and receiver Chris Tyree (Notre Dame) as incoming transfers. Greene, who also visited Penn State, confirmed his decision on social media.

Like Tyree and Neville, Greene is returning to his home state with his decision. He starred at St. Christopher’s in Richmond where he earned a 4-star recruiting ranking from 247 Sports. Rivals and On3 tabbed him as the No. 3 prospect in Virginia in the Class of 2022. He finished his career with 85 catches for 1,456 receiving yards. He had 42 receptions for 833 yards and 15 touchdown as a senior and was named the All-Prep League Player of the Year. He narrowed his final choices out of St. Chris down to North Carolina, Georgia, and Clemson.

The 6’2″, 200-pound receiver could not carve out similar success at UNC. In two seasons with the Tar Heels, he made only 5 catches for 43 yards and 1 touchdown. After he played sparingly over the second half of the 2023 season with appearances against only Georgia Tech (Oct. 28) and Campbell (Nov. 4), Greene decided to enter the transfer portal. The Cavaliers immediately began recruiting him when he became available with an in-home visit followed by an official visit.

With Tyree and Neville also on board, UVA has added a lot of potential firepower to the offense. Tyree, also from Richmond, posted more than 450 yards of total offense in all four seasons at Notre Dame. This past season at receiver, he had 484 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns. He finished with 3,284 all-purpose yards (1,161 rush, 945 receiving, 119 punt return, 1,059 kick return) in his career there. Over 30 games at Harvard, Neville hauled in 62 catches for 698 yards and 8 touchdowns.

After the season produced by Northwestern transfer Malik Washington (110 receptions, 1,426 receiving yards, 9 touchdowns), Virginia clearly hopes to create some more transfer portal magic with the recent additions.

Greene shared some receiving film on his social media profile here.

  1. Love that he’s here! Kris, is it possible that you can photoshop the jersey so we aren’t sporting uncheats uniforms on our site 🙂
