Malcolm Greene Commits To Virginia As Clemson Transfer

Virginia football coach Tony Elliott said near the end of spring practice that the program would be in the market for an additional cornerback before the upcoming season. On Monday, the Hoos got their guy as Clemson transfer Malcolm Greene chose the Cavaliers.

Greene announced his decision on social media.

As noted in the post caption, Greene is coming home with this decision. The Richmond native played at Highland Springs High School, a little more than an hour away from Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. He played on two Virginia 5A State Championship teams at HSHS and was rated a 4-Star recruit among the top 20 players in the state as a senior.

Greene has direct ties to the UVA program beyond that as well. He committed to Clemson out of high school and Tony Elliott was still an assistant coach there at that time. Elliott since took the head coach job with Virginia where the Hoos recruited and signed Miles Greene, Malcolm’s younger brother, as part of the 2023 recruiting class. Their older brother Mike Greene played at JMU and signed a free agent deal with Tampa Bay in the NFL and made the practice squad.

Malcolm Greene comes to Virginia following three solid years with Clemson. He appeared in 29 games with 5 starts for the Tigers, recording 38 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. He played both corner and nickel back, which should make him a versatile option in UVA defensive coordinator John Rudzinski’s scheme.

Greene’s transfer decision addresses a position of need. The other players listed at corner on the Virginia roster have limited experience or have been mostly special teams contributors to date. UVA worked senior safety Coen King at corner for much of the spring to help address depth concerns at that spot. The Cavaliers also brought in Iowa State transfer Tayvonn Kyle after the season. He started at one cornerback spot in the Blue-White Spring Game.

Greene has two years of eligibility remaining thanks to the COVID bonus year. The 5’10”, 195-pound defensive back graduated from Clemson in December and will be a graduate student. He should be in immediate contention for a starting cornerback spot after Virginia lost Anthony Johnson, who signed a free agent with the New Orleans Saints, and Fentrell Cypress II, who transferred to Florida State. Johnson and Cypress posted 12 and 13 pass breakups last season to rank in the top 20 nationally while playing only 10 games.
