TheSabre.com’s Fan Friday: Remembering Games From An Older Era

The Virginia football team returned to workouts this week. The Cavaliers finished last season at 5-5 and opted out of bowl season during the ongoing pandemic.

A couple of social media videos from Virginia Athletics showed the Hoos back at work.

Football, of course, is something fans have interest in year round. The offseason is a time when message board threads often pop up about past seasons and big games. One of those threads started on Thursday, but with a twist. Poster stuboy asked about games from pre-1980 in this thread, noting that those games don’t get discussed as much. The thread pulled out lots of great examples from an earlier era.

One post definitely should be shared here in the Fan Friday feature and that’s from Wahoo62:

And now let’s look at the weekly selections.

  1. I was a second year man and a cheerleader at that WVA game.! Admittedly, the second half of the game and the drive home from Richmond were a bit of a blur. Cheerleaders had to get to away games under their own power in those days. We had old sweaters, a couple of megaphones, and an old drum that didn’t travel with us.
I vaguely remember a tussle between cheerleaders over possession of school flags. Roger (not Bob) Davis and Ed Carrington had been stars at Episcopal.
