The Virginia football team squandered the opportunity for an ACC home win last week when Miami came from behind and won 14-12 in the fourth overtime. The loss left the Hoos disappointed as they fell to 3-5 on the season.
Fans, understandably, remain frustrated with how the season has unfolded so far. It’s basically been a bizarro version of 2021 when the offense scored repeatedly, but the defense couldn’t get stops. This season, the defense is hanging in there and holding opponents off the scoreboard or at least to field goals, but the offense can’t consistently score.
With long-time rival North Carolina up next on the schedule, the focus has moved from the big picture to a one-week view: can the Hoos pull off an upset of the dreaded Heels? Carolina comes to Charlottesville ranked No. 17 in the polls with the nation’s No. 6 scoring offense leading the way. In other words, if UVA found a way to knock off UNC this week, it would certainly be an upset on paper.

The Virginia defense has played well in recent weeks.
The ability to get a win is certainly there. But it’s been there every game. The question is, can the offensive coaches bring it out and onto the field?
