TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Virginia Coaching Changes

While the sports year winds down for the baseball and track and field teams, a some other Virginia programs received key offseason news this week. Both came on the coaching side of the ledger as men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse received some news on assistants.

Tony Bennett announced a hire to replace Kyle Getter, who recently departed for Notre Dame. He made a familiar choice. Ron Sanchez, who stepped down as head coach for Charlotte, rejoined the program after spending 12 seasons with Bennett at Washington State and Virginia before leaving for the 49ers. The Cavaliers won 212 games during Sanchez’s 9 seasons on staff previously.

The news brought up a lot of discussion on the message boards. Here are some select threads:

The men’s lacrosse news broke later in the week and no official announcement has been made yet, but Lars Tiffany and the Cavaliers are losing offensive coordinator Sean Kirwan. After spending the past 7 years in Charlottesville, Dartmouth has hired Kirwan as its new head coach. The Hoos led the nation in offense this season at 17.24 goals per game and they set a new single season program record for assists with 195.

There are already a couple of threads going on the news:

Other programs that have seen coaching shuffles this spring include men’s tennis and softball. Scott Brown left UVA men’s tennis to become the new head coach at Vanderbilt, his alma mater. Cavalier hitting coach Jake Sidwell also Tweeted about the end of his time with Virginia softball.
