When it comes to the pool, Kate Douglass can hold her own with just about anyone in the world but right now she could use the help of Virginia fans in voting for the 93rd AAU James E. Sullivan Award. She is one of six finalists for the honor.

The award is presented annually to the most outstanding athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level in the United States. In addition to athletic excellence, it aims to recognize qualities of leadership, citizenship, character, and sportsmanship on and off the field. Fans can contribute votes for the James E. Sullivan Award at this link once every 24 hours.

Douglass is alongside finalists Caitlin Clark (Iowa women’s basketball), Dylan Crews (LSU baseball), Jordan Chiles (UCLA gymnastics), Jordan Crooks (Tennessee swimming & diving), and Zach Edey (Purdue men’s basketball). Past swimming winners include Mark Spitz (1971), Janet Evans (1989), Michael Phelps (2003), Missy Franklin (2012), and Caeleb Dressel (2021). This year’s winner will be announced at a ceremony in New York on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The Virginia legend won the 2022 and 2023 Honda Sports Award as the top female in college swimming and diving. She is also a two-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Swimmer of the Year honoree and two-time ACC Swimmer of the Year. Douglass was also named the 2022 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

At this year’s NCAA Championships, Douglass won the 200-yard Individual Medley, the 100y butterfly, and the 200y breaststroke – she set American, NCAA, and U.S. Open records in all three events. She was named the outstanding swimmer of the meet. She won 7 career individual title and 8 NCAA relay championships in her college career.

Douglass followed that up with six medals at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships in Japan. That was tied for the most of any swimmer at the meet. That included two gold medals, one as the individual world champion in the 200-meter IM and one with Team USA’s 4×100-meter medley relay team. She won silver in the 200m breaststroke, the 4×100 freestyle relay, and the 4×100 mixed freestyle relay. She won bronze in the 4×100 mixed medley relay. The New York native previously won a bronze medal in the 200 individual medley at the 2021 Olympic Games as well.

Douglass graduated this spring with a statistics major and will be pursuing a UVA Master’s Degree in the same.
