Playing in a run-oriented offense for Southern High School (Durham, NC), wide receiver Maurice Covington didn’t always have the chance to show his talents on a consistent basis. This lack of opportunity may have been a big reason why many onlookers during the Shrine Bowl week were somewhat surprised with his talents. Covington impressed with his physical abilities – specifically his size, athleticism and speed combination.
“I played with confidence the entire week,” Covington said. “I felt I was as good as any other receiver there. I enjoyed the high level of competition. I liked competing against the best.”
Very close to 6-5, Covington says that he has gotten his 40-yard dash time down to below 4.5 seconds. He is also an outstanding leaper.
“I am able to go after balls very well,” Covington said. Weighing 205 pounds right now, he expects to get to 220 pounds on the next level. “I can dominate little corners and I’m quick and fast.”
