In its 33rd season of women’s basketball, University Hall hosts a final regular season game this weekend. The Hoos are 370-81 in The Clam.
As a Virginia women’s basketball fan, you may remember the big games in University Hall. How about those early 90’s games when you maybe didn’t realize the history and magnificence you were watching when Dawn Staley, Tammi Reiss, the Burg twins, and Dena Evans took to the floor.
The mid 90’s boasted their own breed of talent as well when big names like Wendy Palmer, Jenny Boucek, Tora Suber, and DeMaya Walker all laced up their sneakers and made the U-Hall contingent proud. The past 10 years haven’t exactly been boring. Players like Renee Robinson, Leslie Brown, Telisha Quarles, and LaTonya Blue have provided their own spurts of entertainment.
Did I forget to mention before the “golden years” of Virginia women’s basketball. Let’s not forget Val Ackerman, Donna Holt, and Cathy Grimes all played in U-Hall well before Dawn Staley put the program on the map.
O.K., enough name dropping. Everyone who has worn the Virginia blue and orange understands how neat it is that they can be associated with EVERYONE ELSE who has worn the Virginia blue and orange and played in University Hall.
In the Virginia women’s basketball locker room above the actual lockers, every name of anyone who has played in the program since its beginning, three decades ago, is printed on the wall. Every now and then, if you were a bug on the wall, you could catch a current player staring up at the names, most of the time thinking about how each name up there once stood in that same position, about to walk out on the same floor.
“It’s a spirit around U-Hall,” Wendy Palmer-Daniel (formerly Wendy Palmer ’92-’96) said of the atmosphere in and around the arena.
