After 10 minutes inside University Hall, Barry Parkhill was awestruck. The 17-year-old high school recruit from State College, Pennsylvania, visited the arena in 1968 when it was only three years old and was impressed enough with the new facility to sign on to play at Virginia once the Cavaliers offered him a scholarship. By the time he left U-Hall as a player, UVa had retired his number and the Hoos were on the hoops map. READ MORE

With the NCAA Tournament wrapping up tonight, the Sabre's Last Ball in U-Hall Series, which will continue through the opening of the John Paul Jones Arena, features Wally Walker. Thanks to a Walker-led ACC Tournament run, the Cavaliers made their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1976, which helped propel the UVa program to more postseason success. With the Virginia women's basketball team set for a WNIT game at Pittsburgh tonight, the Sabre's Last Ball in U-Hall series (which will continue through the official opening of the new John Paul Jones Arena) takes a look at one of the Cavaliers' all-time greats: Dawn Staley. The Philadelphia guard helped UVa to a 110-21 record in her four years before moving on to a successful professional career where she became the first U.S. professional to record 1,000 assists. The first player to have his jersey retired, Wilkinson still holds several Virginia records more than 50 years after finishing his career, including most points in a season (898), highest season scoring average (32.1), and highest career scoring average (28.6). The Sabre's "Last Ball in U-Hall" series, which will continue to appear through the opening of the John Paul Jones Arena, rolls on with Ted Jeffries, a fan favorite for his hard work and drive on the floor. Jeffries never led UVa in scoring and was never selected All-ACC while wearing a Cavalier uniform from 1989 to 1993, but but the out-of-position center finished his career with 787 rebounds, good enough for sixth place on the Virginia all-time list. During his Virginia career, Curtis Staples experienced great highs (Elite Eight run his freshman year) and disappointing lows (11-19 record his senior year). Along the way, however, Staples earned the respect of fans, coaches, and players nation-wide as a tough competitor and a dead-eye shooter.
