Last fall, UVa became the first school to offer West Springfield (Springfield, VA) quarterback Peter Lalich and has continued to recruit him heavily ever since (including sending 7 coaches to WSHS yesterday). Today, the staff’s efforts paid off when the 6-5, 235-pound highly touted signal caller verbally committed to the ‘Hoos. Lalich becomes the fifth player – the third from the state of Virginia – to commit to Virginia for the 2007 recruiting class.

“I was talking to Greg Little earlier today and he asked me for my top 5. I said UVa and couldn’t think of the other four,” Lalich replied when asked what put UVa over the top to gain his commitment. “I knew pretty much the whole time that this is where I wanted to be. I told the staff today. Coach Mike [Groh] was really happy…he said it’s one of the biggest things to happen in five years.”

As a junior, Lalich completed 189 of 331 passes (57%) for 2,671 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He was named first-team all-Patriot district and honorable mention Washington Post all-metro for his performance. Lalich has since earned first-team all-combine honors at the National Junior combine in San Antonio in January 2006 and is under consideration for the Elite 11, which brings together the nation’s top ranked quarterbacks.

Lalich had favored UVa for quite some time before going ahead with today’s decision. He chose the ‘Hoos over offers from Miami, Michigan, N.C. State, Pitt and UCLA, among others. Arizona State, Florida State and Oklahoma were among the schools to also show serious interest.

Following his commitment, he has turned into a recruiter for the UVa staff. Lalich told TheSabre.com that he has spoken with WR Greg Little , WR Arrelious Benn , DL Marvin Austin, OL Andrew Nuss , OL William Alvarez
