Varina Notes: More On Chavis; Canady Impresses

One of the larger members of a large Varina Blue Devils (VA) contingent on Grounds on June 18, defensive tackle/offensive lineman Tyrell Chavis , who was competing in UVa’s Big Man Camp, used a water break to tell Mike London that he wanted to be part of Virginia’s 2012 recruiting class.

“He was excited,” Chavis recalled, referring to London’s reaction.

As early as last month, a decision from the 6’4″, 288-pound rising senior didn’t seem imminent. His focus was — and still is, actually — on academics and improving in the classroom. He had a change of heart in terms of committing early, though, and decided to accept the University of Virginia’s offer.

“I really thought about it. I had a talk with my mother and grandfather. I really liked the school. It made sense,” said Chavis, who also had offers from Boston College and Vanderbilt.
