TWIR: Blanding, Brown To Square Off

The “Week In Review” is back with the latest update on how those University of Virginia-bound high school seniors are performing on the gridiron this season. Quin Blanding and his Bayside teammates did what they needed to do to make the playoffs, and their reward is a first round contest against Andrew Brown and the Oscar Smith Tigers on Friday night. The Week In Review, 10th Edition

– 5-star Quin Blanding had two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) as Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) defeated First Colonial, 27-7. With the win, Bayside clinched a playoff berth in the 6A South Region, Conferences 1 & 2 playoffs. The Marlins travel to top seed Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA), which features UVa-bound 5-star defensive lineman Andrew Brown , on Friday night.

– Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) capped off an undefeated regular season in style with a 60-7 win over Hickory. Andrew Brown and the Tiger defense was stingy all season long, allowing an average of 5.4 points per contest and recording three shutouts. As mentioned above, Brown will face his future teammate this Friday night in the first round of the 6A South, Conferences 1 & 2 playoffs.

– Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, FL), which features Virginia-bound linebacker recruit Caanan Brown , rebounded from a loss to capture a 37-14 win over Anclote last week. The Marauders meet Bishop Verot in the Class 3A region semifinals this Friday night.

– TE recruit Evan Butts had a 73-yard touchdown reception but Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, PA) fell to Haverford School, 27-7, in what was its final game of the season. The Churchmen finish the year at 8-3.

In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Episcopal Academy head coach Todd Fairlie said the following about the future Virginia Cavalier: “He’s a superstar of a person and a great kid. Someone like that doesn’t come along very often.”

– UVa’s newest recruit, wide receiver/cornerback Donovan Dowling , and his Varina (VA) teammates fell to rival Highland Springs, 45-35. The Blue Devils (8-2) will host touted defensive end Da’Shawn Hand and the Woodbridge Vikings in the opening round of the 6A South, Conferences 3 & 4 playoffs this Friday night.

– Running back Jordan Ellis rushed for two touchdowns but Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, GA) lost to North Gwinnett, 44-22. Peachtree Ridge (7-3) will next travel to Lassiter in the first round of the Region 7-AAAAAA playoffs.

Ellis scored seven touchdowns over the course of the last two games.

– Upland (CA), which features UVa-bound cornerback/wide receiver Jeffery Farrar , defeated previously unbeaten Rancho Cucamonga for a share of the Baseline League regular season title. The Scots (7-3), winners of four straight games to finish the regular season, host South Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern Section (Inland Division) playoffs this week.

– DE/OLB Jordan Jackson and the Woodgrove (Purcellville, VA) defense recorded shutout no. 5 on the season last week, defeating rival Loudoun Valley 35-0. The Wolverines (7-3) host Loudoun County in the first round of the 4A North Region playoffs on Saturday.

– Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, GA), which is led by cornerback Darious Latimore , lost to Shiloh by a score of 31-14. The Black Knights conclude the 2013 season with a 2-8 record.

– A disappointing season has come to an end for touted offensive lineman Steven Moss and the Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) Chargers, who finished 2013 with a 1-9 record following last week’s loss to King George.

– Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) saw its season come to an end with a loss to Jordan-Matthews. OL Will Richardson and the Cavaliers ended up with a 3-8 record on the year.
